Flag Presentation Ceremony for the Hong Kong, China Delegations to the 6th Changchun Asian Winter Games and the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival was held today

The Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) is delighted to announce that the Flag Presentation Ceremony for the Hong Kong, China Delegations to the 6th Changchun Asian Winter Games (CAWG) and the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) was successfully held at the SF&OC President's Office, Olympic House today (9 January 2007). Witnessed by our prestigious guests, Mrs. LAM CHENG Yuet Ngor, Carrie, JP, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, accompanied by The Hon. Timothy FOK, GBS, JP, President of the SF&OC, presented the HKSAR flag to the Chef de Mission of the CAWG, Mr. Ronnie WONG, JP and Delegation Representative of the AYOF and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association, Mr. YUE Kwok Leung, MH, respectively.

6th Changchun Asian Winter Games

The forthcoming CAWG will be held from 28 January to 4 February 2007 in Changchun, China. The theme of the 6th CAWG is “Asian Winter Games, Charming Changchun”. Hong Kong Delegation, with a total of 26 athletes, will participate in 3 sports out of 10 sports namely: Ice Hockey (23 male athletes), Figure Skating (1 male athlete) and Short Track Speed Skating (2 female athletes). The 43-member delegation list for this Games is listed at Appendix I.

The Federation would like to thank the Arts and Sport Development Fund for providing funding to cover 90% of the expenses for Hong Kong Delegation’s participation in the CAWG (including the round-trip air-tickets, uniform, insurance, etc) while the rest 10% is met by the SF&OC as a usual practice. Regarding athletes’ pre-Games training, 70% of the funding is sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

 
2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival

The bi-annual AYOF was initiated by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) after the successful completion of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The festival aims to provide an environment reminiscent of an Olympic Games to 14 to 19 year-old junior athletes and to promote the Olympic sprit of fair play, honesty and pride. The 5-day AYOF will be held from 17 to 21 January 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 16 events, including: Athletics, Badminton, Cycling, Football, Gymnastics, Swimming, Table Tennis and etc. In the last AYOF, the Federation had sent a Swimming Team who returned home with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. This year, as invited by the AOC again, a 7-member delegation with 2 male and 2 female athletes, 2 coaches and 1 official will be representing Hong Kong to compete in the Table Tennis event.
