The Stars of the "Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2006" Were Born Tonight!

The winners of the Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2006 were announced in a gala Oscars-style Award Ceremony tonight (12 March 2007) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In the senior category, seven out of the eight winners were Medallists of the 2006 Doha Asian Games besides being the first-time recipients of the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, namely, Windsurfing prince CHAN King Yin, Bodybuilder CHAN Yun To, Badminton star YIP Pui Yin, Cyclist CHEUNG King Wai and Wushu athlete Angie TSANG. Disabled runner SO Wa Wai and Badminton queen WANG Chen were once again among the list of recipients. Veteran Cyclist WONG Kam Po, who was awarded five times in this category, also captured the most coveted "Bank of China (Hong Kong) Best of Best Hong Kong Sports Star Award"

For the team sport, the Hong Kong SAR Men's Cricket Team, which ranked 3rd in the Asian Ranking last year was enough for them to earn the "Team Only Sports Award"; while the Table Tennis Duo LI Ching and KO Lai Chak, the Doha Asian Games Gold Medallist in Men’s Double event clinched the title in the Team Event category.

A total of 148 nominations were received from 31 National Sports Associations, in which 130 individual athletes, five team only sports and 13 team events nominations were received for this year's Awards. The winners of the various categories were all deserving sports stars who have put forward their best effort to strive for excellence in international competitions to win for the glory of Hong Kong.

In the Awards Presentation Ceremony, The Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; Mrs. Carries LAM, JP, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Mr. LEE Wing Hung, Raymond, Chief Financial Officer of Bank of China (Hong Kong), Title Sponsor of the Awards, famous personalities from the culture and entertainment sectors were among the presenters this evening. Moreover, many distinguished government officials and sports leaders from Members Associations of the Federation were present in this glittering occasion to share the glories and happiness of the winning athletes.

Looking at the overall results, same as last year, Cycling was the overall biggest winner at this Awards, sweeping away five awards, including one in the "Bank of China Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award", two in the Sports Stars Awards, one in Junior Sports Stars Award and one in Potential Sports Stars Award. However, Badminton also obtained a most satisfactory result, with both WANG Chen and YIP Pui Yin among the eight Hong Kong Sports Stars of 2006.
