Commissioned by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong and sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, the Department of Physical Education, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) completed the Survey Findings on "How Active is the Hong Kong Public?" in April 2007.
|
The Survey aims at examining the mode and age groups taking part in leisure time physical activity (LTPA), thus arousing public awareness on the physical and mental development of individuals. The Survey results indicate that Hong Kong people who participate in sports regularly will be more cheerful and in better mood. It is noted that 60% of the respondents do not take part in regular sport activities. The major reasons in priority are time constraint, lack of interest in sports and encountering difficulty in securing the sporting venues.
The telephone surveys were conducted by HKBU on 2-10 April 2007. 1200 respondents aged over 15 years of age were secured in this survey. The contents of the Survey were put on their sports habit, including the frequency and category of sports participation, the hurdles or difficulties encountered when participating in the sport activities and their feelings after sports participation. It is found that the male respondents aged between 15 and 24 and the male respondents between 55 and 65 have been mostly involved in sporting activities, while the female respondents aged between 25 and 34 are the least involved. Based on the survey, the Department of Physical Education, HKBU has the following three recommendations: (i) the sense of achievement in sport activities can encourage more Hong Kong people to participate in sports; (ii) the frequency of participating in sports will also be raised by their enjoyment in sports; and (iii) Hong Kong people can afford to spare some time for participating in sports if they can achieve good time management.
