Amidst keen competition in the category of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards”, badminton queen WANG Chen and veteran cyclist WONG Kam Po were once again among the 8 winners in this category which made them six times winners of this Awards. WONG Kam Po was also for the first-time awarded the “Hong Kong Sportsmanship Sports Star Award”. For the second time consecutively our much loved and deserving Kam Po captured the most coveted “Bank of China (Hong Kong) Best of Best Hong Kong Sports Star Award”. The rest of the awardees of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” including Billiard player Marco FU, Swimmer Sherry TSAI, Windsurfer HO Chi Ho, Wushu athlete HEI Zhi Hong, mentally-handicapped Table Tennis player LAI Wai Ling and Swimmer LEUNG Shu Hang.
For team sport, the Northern Lion Dance Team that captured a Silver medal in the 2nd Macau Asian Indoor Games last year clinched the title in the “Team Only Sport Award” while the Hong Kong Wushu Taolu Team (Women’s Dual Event), being the champion of the 9th Wushu World Championship naturally won the “Team Event Award”.
A total of 144 nominations were received from 32 Member Associations of the Federation, in which 126 individual athletes, 5 team only sports and 13 team events nominations were received for this year Awards. In 2007, all nominees have devoted their utmost effort to strive for excellence in all their competitions which brought added glory to the Hong Kong Sports Community. They were most deserving of the honour and recognition given to them in this prestigious Awards Presentation Ceremony.
The Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; Mr. TSANG Tak Sing, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs; and Mr. David LAM, Deputy Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong), Title Sponsor of the Awards were the officiating VIPs of the Awards Presentation Ceremony. Many famous personalities from the government, culture and entertainment sectors were also invited to present prizes at today ceremony. Moreover, many distinguished government officials and sports leaders from Member Associations of the Federation were presented in this glittering occasion to share the glories and happiness of the winning athletes.
Looking at the overall results, WONG Kam Po was the overall biggest winner of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2007” in sweeping away three awards, including the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards”, “Hong Kong Sportsmanship Sports Star Award” and “Bank of China Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”. Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped also attained very satisfactory results, with LAI Wai Ling and LEUNG Shu Hang bagging two Awards among eight Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards.
At the presentation ceremony, the Bank of China (Hong Kong) further showed their commitment to support local elite athletes by taking the lead in donating HK$1 million to the “Hong Kong Athletes Career and Education Programme” launched by the Federation.
