Brilliant Star Athletes Shine at the “Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2009”!

11 March 2010, Hong Kong - Winners of the “Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2009” were being acclaimed in a gala Oscars-style Awards Presentation Ceremony tonight (11 March 2010) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Among the prestigious presenters composing of high ranking government officials and VIPs from the culture and entertainment sectors of the community were the Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, IOC Member and President of the Federation; Mr. TSANG Tak Sing, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs and Mr. HE Guangbei, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong) who were also the officiating VIPs of this occasion.

This year’s event was extremely competitive and more than half of the eight awardees won this Award for the first time. Steven WONG, gold medalist in the 2009 Hong Kong East Asia Games won the much coveted award – “Bank of China (Hong Kong) Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”, beating Hannah WILSON (Swimming), by a narrow margin. Also in the list was Rebecca CHIU (Squash). She attained the most gold medals among the Hong Kong athletes in the recent East Asian Games. NG On Yee (Billiard), gold medalist of the IBSF World Snooker Championship was among the group. The remaining awardees of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” included WU Siu Hong (Bowling), silver medalist in the Kaohsiung World Games, CHAN Wai Kei (Windsurfing), LAI Wai Ling (Sports for Mentally Handicapped – Table Tennis) and LEUNG Shu Hang (Sports for Mentally Handicapped – Swimming).
The public had not forgotten to pay tribute to the Hong Kong East Asian Games Football Team who attained the first ever gold medal for football carving a milestone in the history of Hong Kong sport. The Team won the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport”. In the face of strong competition in the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event” category, the Hong Kong Cycling Team and Hong Kong Junior Women’s Squash Team emerged as the eventual two winners respectively in this category.
This year’s Awards received a total of 178 nominations from 35 National Sports Associations, with 156 athletes competing for “individual awards”, 4 teams for “team only sport” award and 18 teams for “team events awards”. During 2009, outstanding achievements were attained by all nominees in various international multi-sports Games such as the 1st Asian Youth Games, the 3rd Asian Indoor Games, 5th East Asian Games, the Universiade and the 11th National Games. All nominees truly deserved the honour and recognition for their excellent performance which help to raise Hong Kong status to an even higher level in the international sports arena.
A special cheque presentation was held during the ceremony in which Mr. HE Guangbei, on behalf of Bank of China (Hong Kong), presented part of the net proceeds from the sale of Olympic Banknote amounting to HKD10,000,000.00 to SF&OC, received by the Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, for nurturing athletes in the local sports arena as well as supporting the careers and education development of retired athletes.
