Handover Ceremony of the East Asian Games Association Secretariat

While the staging of the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games concluded successfully in December last year, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) held the Handover Ceremony of the East Asian Games Association (EAGA) Secretariat today (13 April 2010) at the President¡¦s Office of Olympic House. The handover of the EAGA Secretariat to Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) signifies the conclusion of the four-year EAGA Secretariat in Hong Kong.

The EAGA Secretariat, handed over to Hong Kong on 2 February 2006, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Association. It acts as a communication channel between the member NOCs and the 5th East Asian Games Planning Committee. According to the EAGA Constitution, the Secretariat shall be located in the NOC hosting the current East Asian Games and will be transferred to the next hosting NOC at the completion of the Games. Thus, a five-member COC delegation headed by Mr. YU Zaiqing, Vice President of COC, arrived at Hong Kong for the Handover Ceremony.

The Handover Ceremony was held at 11:30 a.m. in President¡¦s Office of Olympic House with The Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, President of SF&OC, Mr. YU Zaiqing, Vice President of COC and Mrs. Betty FUNG, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services as the Guest of Honour. Elected Officers of SF&OC, officials from Home Affairs Bureau, Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Liaison Office of the Central People¡¦s Government in the HKSAR also made their presence in the Ceremony.

In his speech, Mr. FOK thanked the support from the Hong Kong SAR Government and the members of EAGA in these few years which contributed to the smooth operation of the EAGA Secretariat in Hong Kong. He wished the continuous success of the Secretariat under the governance of COC. In reply, Mr. YU mentioned that the COC would put in their full effort, following the objective of the Association, to support the development of sports in the East Asian region.

The Ceremony ended at 12:00 noon, followed by a Welcome Luncheon for the Chinese Olympic Committee delegation at Regal Hongkong Hotel.
