Award Presentation cum Opening Ceremony: A Prelude to the Olympics 2004: Exhibition of the “Sport and Art Contest”

A Prelude to the Olympics 2004: “Sport and Art Contest” was concluded successfully. The Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) specially launched the Award Presentation and Opening Ceremony of the above event at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre today.

To promote the development between local sport and art industry and to celebrate the forthcoming 2004 Athens Olympic Games, the SF&OC were invited by the International Olympic Committee to take part in the second Sport and Art Contest. This art competition was divided into regional and international phases. In Hong Kong, among the artworks of the invited local artists, CHU Hing-wah’s “Olympics on the Beach” and Joyce Hsu’s “Migration” were selected to represent Hong Kong in the international phase of the Contest.
In order to arouse citizens’ enthusiasm towards Olympics and provide an opportunity for the public to witness the local artists’ artworks, the SF&OC and the co-organizers, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) put the artworks on show, with the 13 original entries as well, at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (from 7 to 23 August 2004) and Exit J, MTR Central Station (from 24 August to 20 September 2004) in two stages and all citizens are welcome to visit.
Also, at the same function, the Hon. Timothy Fok, GBS, JP, President of the SF&OC, announced that the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) had agreed to send its gold medallists to visit Hong Kong after 2004 Athens Olympic Games from 6 to 8 September 2004. The visiting delegation headed by Mr. Yuan Weimin, President of the COC would comprise all gold medallists for a series of programmes. The SF&OC plans to arrange a programme of meeting the Hong Kong public; glamorous performances at the Hong Kong Stadium and also roving demonstrations by the medallists around Hong Kong. The details information of visiting delegation and related arrangements of this event will be announced by the SF&OC soon.
