18.11.2004
The yearly prestigious sports event, 2004 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards will be launched on March 7, 2005. Organizer Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) held an Announcement Press Conference today to announce details of the Awards.

This year’s event continues to receive support from the HKSAR Government and the commercial sector of the community. Beside being subvented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the first time the Sino Group becomes the Gold Sponsor with Samsung Electronics H. K. Co., Ltd. the Silver Sponsor. In addition, the RoadShow Holdings Limited, Television Broadcasting Limited, McDonald’s Restaurants (Hong Kong) Limited, Oriental Press Group Limited, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited and also ESPN STAR Sports are the Official Sponsors of the Awards. The generous joint effort from all of them will definitely bring Hong Kong sport to an even higher profile.

The various categories of the Awards are as follow:
- Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards
- Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards
- Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport
- Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Event
- Hong Kong Potential Sports Stars Awards
- Hong Kong Sportsmanship Sports Star Award

To recognize the effort of athletes in Team Only Sport, the SF&OC introduces for the first time a different award for the “Team Only Sport” and the “Team Event”. “Team Only Sport” is defined as the sport with no individual event category, in which success depends on the interaction and independence of the whole team during the competition. “Team Event” is defined as the different forms of combination of an individual sport (e.g. double, relay or overall). Member Associations of the SF&OC are invited to submit their nominations of athletes or team from today and the deadline closes on 6 December 2004. All rules and regulations related to the Awards and the nomination forms can be found on the SF&OC website: www.hkolympic.org.

This year, our Hong Kong athletes attained outstanding achievements in both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in Athens. Consequently, the number of winners, in the most prestigious category, the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” has been increased from six to eight. Meanwhile, to strengthen the publicity and to encourage more involvement from the community, altogether four of the categories are open for public voting, instead of just one as in last year. The four categories are “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards”; “Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards”; “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport” and “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Event”. Members of the public could vote for their favourite athletes and team on the SF&OC Website from 31 December 2004 to 31 January 2005.

To further publicize this event, as in previous year, the TVB and the RoadShow Holdings Limited sponsor airtimes on “Sports World” and “RoadShow” programme respectively. A promotional video encouraging the public to vote has been produced for this purpose.

Prize money totaling HK$456,000 will be awarded to all winners in the six categories. Apart from that, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited will again sponsor six round trip economy class tickets from Hong Kong to any Asian destinations for the winners of Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards. To give added encouragement to young athletes, ESPN STAR Sports is sponsoring a scholarship of HK$15,000 each to two young athletes age 18 or under who will be selected from nominees of all categories by the Judging Panel, except the two categories awards for “Team Only Sport” and “Team Event”.
