Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2002 Press Conference

The Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department join hands once more to launch the annual prestigious sports event - "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2002". This year, besides Bonaqua, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited and ESPN STAR Sports, we are delighted to have support from more sponsors from the commercial sector of the community namely, AIA Foundation, Mainland Headwear Holdings Limited and TAG Heuer.

All member associations of SF&OC of HK, China can nominate athletes for the categories of "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards", "Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards" and "Hong Kong Sports Team of the Year Award" and "Hong Kong Potential Sports Stars Awards". A new category, "Hong Kong Well Being Sports Stars Awards" has been introduced to recognize the contribution of an athlete to his/her teammates with Olympic spirit and sportsmanship in and outside the sports field. All NSAs are invited to submit their nominations by 5 December 2002.

The total prize money of this year amounts to HK$346,000. Apart from cash award, each winner of "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards", "Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards" and "Hong Kong Sports Team of the Year Award" will each receive a trophy, while the winner of "Hong Kong Potential Sports Stars Awards" and "Hong Kong Well Being Sports Stars Awards" will each receive a Bonaqua Trophy. Same as last year, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited has generously sponsored six round trip economy class tickets from Hong Kong to any Asian destinations for the winners of the Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards. Besides, ESPN STAR Sports will be offering a scholarship of HK$15,000 each to two young athletes age 18 or under who will be selected from nominees of all categories except the "Hong Kong Sports Team of the Year Award". TAG Heuer for the first time joins in to sponsor six watches to the winners of "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards".

In order to encourage more people to vote, the general public will be able to vote for their six favorite athletes from 15 January to 5 February 2003 through the web site of SF&OC of HK, China (www.hkolympic.org). With the support of TVB, public can also vote for their favorite athletes through their mobile phone during that period. Details will be released to the public in TVB Weekly in due course.

The results of each category will be announced in the Award Presentation Ceremony to be held in the evening on Monday, 10 March 2003 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the annual Spring Dinner of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China
