“Sport brings art to light and enables it to make itself known. It engenders
beauty, since it displays the athlete, who is a living sculpture. Because of the
monuments which it erects and the spectacles and festivals which it organizes,
sport enables art to make itself known.”. These words of de Coubertin underline
the cultural and aesthetic aspects of Olympism. Early celebrations of the
Olympic Games included competitions for authors, painters and sculptors. These
were discontinued after 1984, but artistic exhibitions accompany many Olympic
events. Nowadays, cultural programs supported by the IOC, Organizing Committee
and NOCs include art, music, literature and architecture. It is with this
concept the International Olympic Committee (IOC) creates the Literature
Competition to strengthen the link between literature and the celebration of the
Olympic Games.
