The History of Judo
The meaning of “Judo” is “gentle way” which means to teach the principle of flexibility in the application of technique. Literally “the way of softness and flexibility,” a martial art formulated by Prof. Jigoro Kano, based on his development and adaptation of several styles of “Jujutsu” as well as his own philosophical ideals. The Prof. Kano who’s established Judo of him founded the Kodokan in 1882.

Global development
The International Judo Federation was founded in 1952 and there were included 19 countries members. Judo (Men) became an official event in the Olympic Games of 1964 at Tokyo and Judo (Women) became an official event in the Olympic Games of 1996 at Atlanta.

Current Development at Hong Kong
The association jointly presented judo courses with other organizations such as LCSD, Discipline Departments, Voluntary Associations (Caritas, JPC, Community center) and Schools. The amount of “judo dojo” is exceeding 100 and the numbers of players are almost near 20,000.

The association has many learning and training schemes to provide opportunities to youth, such as “Easy Sport Scheme”, “School Sports Programme”, “Sports selection scheme”, “Sports Leadership Scheme” and “Community Sports Club”.

There are trainings and examinations for the qualified players to achieve black belt holders. The existing black belt holders can also take examinations for coaching certificate. The association even has courses for the coaches which aim to teach more professional knowledge to them.

The squad training provides promotion ladder from “Joint School Sports Training Programme” and “Judo Youth Training Scheme” to the “National Squad Training” for overseas championships.

To improve the level of Hong Kong athletes, the association organizes several international events in Hong Kong every year. The association also invites some famous coaches to come to Hong Kong and attend seminars. Through the sharing of their valuable experience, the association hopes to improve the standard of local coaches.

The association irregularly sends teams to overseas countries and makes the players familiar with the skills of different countries players.

Characteristic
The most emphasize ideal of Judo is the safety and politeness training in all time. Even in usual training or competition, no matter when they train or compete, the players must bow to others at the beginning and the ending.

Judo is fun
Judo is unique in all age groups. Even the disabled persons can participate together in learning and practicing the sport. Moreover, it is an inexpensive and year-round activity that appeals to people from all walks of life. Many people over sixty years of age still enjoy the sport, as well as young boys and girls.
