The sport of Canoe is well-developed throughout the world for a very long time and it is now one of the medal games of the Olympic Games.

The sport of canoeing was developed since 1950 in Hong Kong and introduced by the governed British military forces. The equipments were made of wood or canvas in the past and fibered canoe is used since 1960’s. Nowadays, canoeing is a popular sport in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Canoe Union (HKCU) was incorporated in Hong Kong under the Companies Ordinance as a company limited in 1973 and is a member of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF & OC); East Asian Canoe Federation; Asian Canoe Confederation and International Canoe Federation.

The Chairman of HKCU, Mr. Anthony Chan, is the Asian Regional Representative of the International Canoe Federation. The HKCU maintains a close communication with the neighboring regions for the development of the canoeing.

Under HKCU, there are 30 affiliated clubs and 1300 individual members, 2 international coaches, 13 international referees, 1 China National Coach and more than 500 registered coaches in the HKCU.

Mission
(1) To promote sport safety of canoeing.
(2) To arouse the interests and improve the skills of the individuals and group participants in the sport of canoeing
(3) To select and train talented athletes to represent Hong Kong in the international competitions.

Sports Development
The HKCU promotes diverse sports including Kayak, slalom, racing kayak and canoe polo.

International events
The local talented athletes are encouraged to represent Hong Kong in the international competitions such as Olympic Games, World Champions, Asian Games, Asian Champions and All China Games.
Local events
The HKCU organizes various competitions including long and short distance matches, Inter-schools competitions, age-groups competitions, canoe polo competitions and orienteering competitions.

Sport Promotion
Except the year rounded training courses for the individual participants, the HKCU also organizes various training courses with different organizations, clubs and schools.
