International Olympic Committee Olympic Solidarity Programmes 2005-2012 - Helping Athletes Strive for the Best

06.10.2005
The Olympic Solidarity Programmes are organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aim at helping athletes for better training and competitions, striving for excellence in participation of the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games.

In our last participation in the “Olympic Scholarships for Athletes in Athens 2004”, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF & OC) nominated eight athletes to IOC and finally seven were approved. They were Mr. Chiang Wai Hung from Hong Kong Amateur Athletics Association, Mr. Ng Wei from Hong Kong Badminton Association, Mr. Ho Siu Lun from Hong Kong Cycling Association, Ms. Chan Wing Suet from Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association, Mr. Cheung Yuk from Hong Kong Table Tennis Association, Mr. Law Hiu Fung from Hong Kong, China Rowing Association and Mr. Ho Chi Ho from Windsurfing Association of Hong Kong. Each athlete was awarded US$1,000-1,200 on monthly basis. It was most encouraging that except Mr. Ho Siu Lun who withdrew himself from the scheme due to personal reason, the other six athletes all qualified for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games with the support of the Olympic Solidarity (OS).

For the coming programmes, in addition to the “Olympic Scholarships for Athletes in Beijing 2008”, the Federation is prepared to nominate outstanding athletes to the following two programmes as well, namely the “Team Support Grants for 2005-2008” and the “Training Grants for Young Athletes for 2012”. It is beyond doubt that these two programmes will help Hong Kong sports team and young athletes in their preparation and qualification to the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

All applications will be assessed by the Selection Committee under the chairmanship of Mr. HU Fa Kuang, GBS, JP together with Mr. Ronnie M. C. WONG, JP and Professor LEUNG Mee Lee as the members. To meet the deadline of the OS, eligible members Associations are requested to submit their applications from 10 October 2005 to 24 October 2005. Selected applications will be sent to the OS for approval and the results will be announced in December 2005.
