The east Asian region has always been the powerhouse of Asian sports, in which China, Japan and Korea are traditionally listed among the international sports giants. As a comparatively small territory, Hong Kong captured 2 golds, 2 silvers and 9 bronzes in this highly competitive 4th East Asian Games by virtue of the dedication and commitment of our athletes and the Olympic spirit of fair play which we always uphold.

Judging from the number of medals achieved, it is certain that we are marching on firmly with our consistent momentum towards the international titles. It is beyond doubt that we are not left behind in the Asian sports scene, however, it is the rapid improvement of certain countries/ territories which caught us in surprise.
Asian sports scene has been evolving in the past few years. The changes in competition formats and rules, our neighboring countries/ territories’ new strategies in sports and the huge resources put forth to sports development all contributed to the countless waves in the Asian sports. These impacts to the Hong Kong sports are vividly presented in the 4th East Asian Games. We learn from our experiences in this East Asian Games that, if we wish to keep up our pace with our East Asian counterparts, we have a whole list of urgent tasks to attend to without delay, not to mention a solid and effective sports policy to reallocate our handful of resources tactically and sound athletes support system.
Upon the lowering of the EAGA flag in the Closing Ceremony of the 4th East Asian Games, Hong Kong will come to the spotlight as the host country of the next East Asian Games and our shoulders are heavily loaded with the high expectation of the participating territories/ countries and the mission to excel ourselves in terms of sports performance. As a member of the Olympic Family, we will adhere to the “Fair Play” principle of the Olympic spirit to host the best ever East Asian Games in 2009.
