Manulife-Funded Athletes for Olympics Bid Named

10 Elite Athletes to Embark on Journey to Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Hong Kong ¡V Manulife (International) Limited (MIL), the official Worldwide Life-Insurance Partner, and the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), today jointly announced the 10 awardees of the Manulife Hong Kong Sports Scholarship Program.

The 10 athletes, who will each receive a scholarship of HK$100,000 under Phase I (June 2006 to May 2007) of the Program, are:
- Ms. YIP Pui Yin (Hong Kong Badminton Association),
- Mr. Steven WONG (Hong Kong Cycling Association),
- Mr. Kenneth CHENG (Hong Kong Equestrian Federation),
- Ms. Sabrina LUI (Hong Kong Fencing Association),
- Mr. SO Sau Wah (Hong Kong, China Rowing Association),
- Mr. YAM Fong Hoi (HK Shooting Association),
- Ms. Hannah WILSON (Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association),
- Mr. LEUNG Chu Yan (Hong Kong Table Tennis Association),
- Mr. CHAN Wing Yau (Hong Kong Tennis Association), and
- Ms. CHAN Wai Kei (Windsurfing Association of Hong Kong).

We are confident that these athletes will fully utilize the resources that the Scholarships make available and unleash the enormous potential they have within themselves; and as the Worldwide Life-Insurance Partner, we hope that through their hard work and perseverance, each of these athletes will set a fine example for the youth in Hong Kong and inspire them to pursue excellence in whatever they do.¡¨
By the submission deadline for Phase I of the program, the SF&OC had received a total of 24 applications from 13 National Sports Associations. The Selection Committee consisted of the Federation¡¦s Vice President Mr. F. K. HU, GBS, JP and its two Honorary Deputy Secretary Generals, Mr. Ronnie WONG, JP and Prof. LEUNG Mee Lee.
Apart from providing Hong Kong athletes with the best possible chance of success at the Beijing Olympics, the Scholarship program aims to contribute to the overall development of sport in Hong Kong and to reinforce Manulife¡¦s commitment to promoting the aims and ideals of the Olympic movement to the local public.
Awardees under Phase I who achieve outstanding performances in international competition during the period can apply for renewal of the scholarship under Phase II of the program. Applications for the second round of the scholarship are expected to be announced in April 2007.
