Formation of the Hong Kong Olympians and Meritorious Athletes' Commission

In response to an appeal from the International Olympic Committee to set up an Athlete's Commission under each National Olympic Committee (NOC), the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) is proud to announce today that the first and only Commission specifically for Olympian and meritorious athletes who have participated in multi sports major games since the 1950s, namely Hong Kong Olympians and Meritorious Athlete's Commission will soon be formed under the Federation.

The Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, President of the SF&OC expressed at the Press Conference announcement that on the eve of Hong Kong's co-hosting and hosting of international multi-sports Games, it is considered the ripe time to launch this project, with the aim to recognize our athlete's outstanding performances in international sports competitions, and to provide local top athletes with more opportunities of overseas exposure in both educational and sports participation as well as to have opportunities of further studies and development especially when they retire from their athletes' careers.
Under the patronage of the Hon. Mrs. Rita FAN, President of the HKSAR Legislative Council, the mission of the Commission is to represent the view of the athletes within the NOC and to unite top athletes who have represented Hong Kong in international multi-sports games, to promote Olympism and to encourage their participation in sports community service. The general membership of Commission includes past participants of Olympics, Paralympics, FESPIC, Special Olympics, Asian Games, East Asian Games and Commonwealth Games (up to 1994).
We were pleased to announce on the same day that the Junior Incentive Awards Scheme will be implemented with effective from 2007 with the aims to motivate our youth to strive with their best efforts in international competitions and to strengthen our athlete feeder system. All member Associations of the Federation are eligible to nominate qualified athletes. Cash incentives will be disbursed to athletes with outstanding results in: Australian Olympic Youth Festival, International Children's Games, Intercity Games and International / Asian Youth Championships sanctioned by International Federation/ Asian Federation. This scheme is expected to provide athletes with funding of approximately HK$1 million each year.
