Doha 2006 Asian Games Torch Relay in Hong Kong Successfully Held 27 October 2006

The 15th Doha Asian Games is going to be held from 1 December to 15 December 2006 in Doha, Qatar. To celebrate this quadrennial event, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) is proud to announce that we are chosen by the Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee to be one of the 15 relay legs among the Asian countries/ regions.

Opening Ceremony of the Doha 2006 Asian Games Torch Relay – Hong Kong leg was successfully held Friday, 27 October 2006 at 3:00pm at the UC Centenary Garden, Tsim Sha Tsui East. The Opening Ceremony was officiated by the Hon. Timothy FOK, President of the SF&OC, His Excellency Abdullah Adbul Rahman AL-MUFTAH, Ambassador of Qatar Embassy in Beijing, and Mr. Thomas CHOW, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services. In the ceremony, His Excellency handed the Torch Flame to President FOK, and the first torchbearer received the Flame from the President and kicked off the 4.5km Torch Relay, which passed through Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Kowloon Public Pier, the Victoria Harbour, Expro Promenade, Reunification Monument, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre en route, and finally arrives at the Golden Bauhinia Square.

By the nominations of all National Sports Associations, 22 elite local athletes selected as Torchbearers. In addition to the 2 representatives from Qatar formed the team of 24 torchbearers. The first and the last Torchbearers are Bowler WU Siu Hong and Table Tennis stars, LI Ching and KO Lai Chak respectively. Closing Celebration started when the Flame arrived at the Golden Bauhinia Square. The Celebration ceremony was officiated by The Hon. Timothy FOK, His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad AL THANI, Prince of Qatar and Ambassador, Doha 2006 Asian Games Torch Relay and Dr. Patrick HO, Secretary for Home Affairs. In the ceremony, the Torch Flame was handed back to Prince of Qatar, symbolizing that the Torch Relay in Hong Kong was successfully held.

This is be the first time that the Asian Games Flame arrives at Hong Kong. The Flame stopped over at Hong Kong for just one day and will depart for Indonesia on 28 October.
