2009 Olympic Day Run – Move, Learn and Discover

The Olympic Day Run (ODR) is an annual event held in celebration of the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This year, the 2009 Olympic Day Run was successfully held on 28 June 2009 (Sunday) at 8:30a.m in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort!

The new route attracted more than 4,000 citizens and 9 corporate teams participants ranged from one to 71 years of age. Runners assembled at the Hong Kong Disneyland Coach Park for the Opening and Kick-off Ceremony. During the Opening Ceremony, the Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, President of the Federation, said “it is awe-inspiring to have the continuous support of so many runners” despite the change in venue.

Apart from the Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, Mrs. Carrie YAU, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, and Mr. Andrew KAM, Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, officiated at the kick-off Ceremony.

At the sound of the starting horn, runners followed the tree-lined Fantasy Road and Magic Road towards Sunny Bay. After the turning point on Sunny Bay Road, the route took them along the bank of Inspiration Lake, covering a distance of 4.7km in total.

The theme of the run was “Hong Kong’s Readiness for the 5th East Asian Games”, as the 2009 ODR wished to create excitement for the Games which will take place in Hong Kong in December. The runners demonstrated their support for the Games and Hong Kong athletes by participating in the ODR. In addition, the traditional Olympic Day theme of “Move, Learn and Discover”, which aims to motivate citizens to learn and discover the benefits and joy of exercising, was also promoted.

The Federation would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to various organizations and commercial sponsors for their support to ODR. These include Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Xtep (China) Co. Ltd., Shun Hing Group, Swire Coca-Cola HK, McDonald's Restaurants (Hong Kong) Limited, OPTILED Lighting International Ltd. and BOCHK Charitable Foundation.
