Development of Volleyball in Hong Kong
¡¥Volleyball¡¦ was first developed in the United States of America in 1895 and introduced to China in 1905. The ¡¥Hong Kong & Kowloon Volleyball Association¡¦ was formed in August, 1951 and began to promote volleyball in a more systematic manner. International competitions were held since 1976, including the first awarded ¡¥World Women¡¦s Volleyball Challenge Cup¡¦ in 1983. This event was later renamed as ¡¥Women World Grand Prix¡¦ in 1993 and become a big event in Hong Kong every year. In 1990, ¡¥Beach Volleyball¡¦ was introduced in Hong Kong and is now developed as a new sport program in Hong Kong. After the return of sovereignty to China on 1 July 1997, according to the decision made by the International Olympic Committee, International Volleyball Federation renamed ¡¥Hong Kong & Kowloon Volleyball Association¡¦ as ¡¥Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China¡¦. Under the leading of the President Mr. Hui Chun-fui, 4 Vice-Presidents and other committee members, the local volleyball standard has improved gradually and attracts many people to join this sport. In the 21st century, apart from the traditional indoor and beach volleyball, Hong Kong has put much effort in promoting the Park Volley with the hope to give chances to people in all ages to participate in this sport.
