History of Hong Kong Mountaineering Union
Since mountaineering and climbing activities were becoming popular in Hong Kong in the year 1980, a lot of individuals who love the sport started to gather themselves to form groups and organizations. In mid 1983, the then Recreation and Culture Department of the Hong Kong Government had proposed to set up an union in order to promote and develop the mountaineering and climbing sport, as well as to improve the sports’ safety standard. The Hong Kong Mountaineering Union was formally established on 28 February 1984 and the first General Meeting was held that included eleven mountaineering and climbing groups.
The Hong Kong Mountaineering Union later joined the (U.I.A.A.) and Asian Council for Competition Climbing (A.C.C.C.) to become the official representative for Hong Kong for mountaineering and climbing activities internationally.
Activities of HKMU
1. Promotes and develops expedition, rock climbing, sport climbing and mountain craft activities in Hong Kong
2. Promote and develop the sport safety.
3. Systemizes the coaches and officials (competition judges and route-setters) training program for the mountaineering and climbing sports.
4. Formulated and established training guides and standard in these categories.
5. Initiate Mountaineering Cleaning Day to support environment protection.
Rock Climbing
Traditional climbing takes place at natural cliffs with high level of challenge.
Sport Climbing
In order to eliminate the weather and uncontrollable factors that always affects climbing activities took place in outdoor, climbing at indoor artificial wall has been initiated in 1970’, which is then called “Sport Climbing”.
Mountain Craft
Hiking, map reading, camping, mountain safety, route planning & environmental protection etc.
