HONG KONG LAWN BOWLS ASSOCIATION (II)
|
|
The history of lawn bowls can be traced back to 5000 BC with the Egyptians. Lawn Bowls has been played in Hong Kong since around 1900 when a small group of enthusiasts from overseas obtained a plot of land in Kowloon and founded the first lawn bowls club in Hong Kong. We now have 30 clubs with a total of around 1400 men and 600 lady bowlers.
This sport is now played in over 35 countries - principally the United Kingdom, Guernsey, Jersey, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Norfolk Islands, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Japan, Philippines, Israel, South Africa, U.S.A, Canada. and Netherlands.
Our sport is not so well known here in Hong Kong but once grasped, it is certainly addictive. It is suitable for all ages, so long as you can securely hold the bowl in your hand and it can be played as fun or seriously at competitive levels. We participate in International competitions regularly and even hold international events here in Hong Kong. The aim of the sport is to roll your bowls closer than your opponent to a smaller white/yellow ball (the jack). You can participate on your own, or with others in games of singles, pairs, triples or fours.
The playing venues are at public greens or private clubs and the playing surface may be natural or synthetic grass. It is internationally recognized and recommended as a good form of physical and mental exercise for all age groups, as most of the muscle groups of the body are used with gentle, non-impact movements and mental discipline and team cooperation is essential for success. Our Association organises training courses for all ages of beginners and experienced bowlers, the youth and the elderly. These are regularly held at all the public greens which are located at Ap Lei Chau, Siu Sai Wan, Victoria Park, Siu Lek Yuen, Tai Po and Tuen Mun. There are also indoor short mat courses regularly held at the indoor recreation centres located throughout Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories.
Both individuals and groups are welcomed. All classes are taught by formally qualified coaches. For details please contact our Association on telephone 2504 8249, fax: 2577 5621, e-mail hklba@hkolympic.org, or look us up on our web-site at www.hklba.org. We look forward to hearing from YOU.
