Rock climbing has been around for a long time, but the activity has only recently been described as a
"sport." Past climbers and mountaineer's competition is within himself and his objective was to reach the summit and return alive.
Sport climbing is more accessible to more people than traditional rock climbing, both in terms of location and in cost of outfitting. This popular form of climbing can be done anywhere that bolted routes exist-at indoor gyms, outdoor crags and on outdoor artificial walls designed for competition. Climbing as a sport began in Hong Kong around 1980s, and Sport Climbing was recognized by the authorities in 1989.
