WINDSURFING ASSOCIATION OF HONG KONG

Windsurfing was introduced into Hong Kong in the seventy. Windsurfing Association of Hong Kong (WAHK) was found in 1979. Its aim is to promote windsurfing and plan the training and competition in Hong Kong.

Windsurfing allows you to get the excited feeling of sailing passing through high waves. You can sail at speed of over 20 knots. There is only a board between you and the sea. The sensation can hardly be described by words.
The aims of the WAHK are:
1. Promotion of the sport of windsurfing in Hong Kong.
2. Co-ordination of windsurfing activities in Hong Kong without affecting the
autonomy of individuals clubs.
3. Protection of the interests of windsurfers through representation to the
government and related bodies.
4. Encouragement of competition and organization of regattas.
5. Representation of windsurfers on the Council of the Hong Kong Yachting Association.
6. Organization of training schemes for instructors, provision of instructional
handbooks, advice to WAHK rec ognized windsurfing schools on request.
7. Providing of windsurfing training courses for members.
Fleets and Affiliated Clubs
There are six fleets under Windsurfing Association of Hong Kong. They are Kowloon, Cheung Chau, Shek O, Tolo, Stanley and Tuen Mun and distributed in Hong Kong, Kowloon, New Territory and Island district. They provide training and
practice area for members. Besides, Cathay Pacific Windsurfing Club, Scout Association of Hong Kong and Windriders League are the affiliated clubs of WAHK.
The history of Hong Kong Windsurfing
WAHK was found in 1979. In the same year it joined the Hong Kong Yachting Association as affiliated member and convened the 1st Hong Kong Open. In 1982, Ken Choi won a bronze medal in the Asian Games. It makes windsurfing well known
to Hong Kong people. In 1988, after working diligently for 9 years the Stanley Clubhouse was built. It was a milestone for WAHK and the sport of windsurfing. In 1990, WAHK employed Rene Appel as coach. He led the athletes to participate in
many large windsurfing events. It became the foundation of winning the gold medal.
Consequently the results were really remarkable. In September 1990, Lee Lai Shan won the silver medal in the Asian Games. Sam Wong ranked the 4th. In 1991,windsurfing was selected by Sports Development Board as one of the target sports.
In 1993, Lee Lai Shan won the champion in the Asian Championship as well as the World Championship. She became the number one sailor in the world ranking list. In 1995, windsurfing was selected as target sport for another 4 years. In 1996, Lee Lai Shan won the gold medal in the Olympic Games. In 1999 and 2001, Ho Chi Ho and
Chan King Yin won the champion trophy in the Youth World Windsurfing Championship respectively.
