HONG KONG HOSTS OFFICIAL ASIAN GAMES FUN RUN, 18th June 2006, Hong Kong, China

18.06.2006

Over 350 children from Hong Kong sprinted to the finish line at the Wanchai Sports Ground, today as part of the Official Asian Games Fun Run.  The Fun Run celebrated sport in Asia and highlighted the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.

Organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, children aged 9 to 19 were invited to participate in the event, which was held in conjunction with the Olympic Day Run at the Wanchai Sports Ground.  The route took the children pass the Golden Bauhinia Square on the waterfront of Wanchai.  This significant landmark represents the return of the former British Colony to the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Each child that took part received a limited edition Asian Games Fun Run T-shirt, as well as a certificate upon completion of the run.

“The runs are being held to promote and spread the message of the Asian Games in the region and also to promote development, understanding and friendship throughout the continent,” said H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah, President of the OCA.

The 2 km run in Hong Kong was part of a series of Official Asian Games Fun Runs which have taken place throughout countries across Asia and the Arab World over the past 2 years in promoting the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006 taking place from 1 – 15 December this year.

“We are delighted that our friends at the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China have worked with us so successfully to organize the Asian Games Fun Run in Hong Kong to promote the Games”, said H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah, President of the OCA.

“Sport empowers us all to achieve and bring a sense of unity across a breadth of race, ethnicity, religion and gender.” He added, “The Asian Games Fun Run epitomizes this aim and will help strengthen the OCA objective of developing understanding and friendship throughout the continent.”

The Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) is responsible for the overall planning and execution of all the elements required to produce the sporting event of the century, the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.  Over 10,000 athletes and team officials will head to the Qatar capital Doha, in what is set to be the “Games of your life”.

The 15th Asian Games Doha 2006 organised under the auspices of the OCA, is the second largest multi-sport event in the world after the Summer Olympic Games with 39 sports and 423 events played throughout the two weeks period from 1 to 15 December 2006.
