The idea of Olympic Day Run was to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 23 June 1894. Nearly 200 countries will organize the Run each year during the same period of time in promoting Olympic Movement. It is proud to announce that 2005 has been declared by the United Nations (UN) as the “International Year of Sport and Physical Education” in order to harness the great power of sport to encourage people to lead an active lifestyle.  In this regard, the theme of this year’s run is “Promoting Physical Education, Let’s Go for a Sporting Life”, aiming to promote the importance of a Sporting Life, hence contribute to their overall well-being.
The Run was officiated by the Hon. Timothy T. T. FOK, IOC member, President of the SF&OC, Ms. Anissa WONG, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and Mr. Joseph LAU, Managing Director of McDonald’s Restaurants (HK) Limited. The appearance of renowned artistes Ms. Cathy Chui and Mr. Sammul Chan who demonstrated warm up exercises with all participants led the climax of the morning.

Mr. FOK was very pleased to see that the number of participant had been increased from 2,500 to 3,500 compared with last year. It marked a growing popularity of sports activities in Hong Kong. He also highlighted the great significance of the Run as an excellent opportunity to bring together 3,500 people to show their commitment to lead a Sporting Lifestyle.

Mr. LAU expressed that McDonald’s was very pleased to be part of this important global event. Their sponsorship of the Olympic Day Run not only reinforced their commitment to supporting the Olympic Games, but also promoting balanced, active lifestyles through providing a fun and sporting activity to the people of Hong Kong.

Right after the Opening Ceremony, participants set off from Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground immediately, they ran along Siu Sai Wan Road, the Promenade and Central Park, and returned to the sports ground. Since the nature of the event was a Fun Run, most participants joined the Run with family members and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the route. In recognition of participant’s support, a souvenir T-shirt and an IOC Certificate were given to all participants.

The Run would not be so successful without the support from Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, McDonald’s Restaurants (HK) Limited, Mizuno Corporation and Swire Coca-Cola HK Ltd.
