Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2012 – Announcement of Results

Widely known as the “Sports Oscars” in Hong Kong, the “Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2012” Awards Presentation Ceremony was held today (14 March) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  Mr. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, International Olympic Committee Member and President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (the Federation), Mrs. Carrie LAM, GBS, JP, Chief Secretary for Administration, and Mr. Jason YEUNG Chi Wai, Deputy Chief Executive, Bank of China (Hong Kong) gave an address and presented awards at the Ceremony. Other prestigious guests presenting the awards included Mr. HUANG Lanfa, Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Mrs. FOK GUO Jingjing and Mr. HU Jia, Olympic Diving Gold Medallists, high ranking government officials and guests from sports and entertainment sectors.  

There were 126 nominations from 40 National Sports Associations, with 104 athletes competing for the “individual” awards, 5 nominated teams for “Team Only Sport” and 17 nominated teams for “Team Events” in this year’s Awards.  Many Hong Kong athletes demonstrated very good performances in the London 2012 Olympic Games and major international competitions which made this year most competitive for the nominees. Having gone through the vetting process by the Vetting Committee and the final voting by the Judging Panel, the Sports Media, and enthusiastic responses from the public voting, the results of the six categories of the Awards were officially announced during the Ceremony.

Ms. Sarah LEE Wai Sze, Bronze Medallist of the Women’s Keirin in London 2012 Olympic Games, hot favourite of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” won it for the first time, and Sarah also won the most coveted “Bank of China (Hong Kong)-Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”.  Other “Hong Kong Sports Stars” Awardees included Ms. YU Chui Yee (Physically Disabled - Wheelchair Fencing) who won the title for the fourth time; Ms. GENG Xiaoing (Wushu) who won the title for the third consecutive years; Ms. YIP Pui Yin (Badminton) and Ms. NG On Yee (Billiard) were also on the list for the second time; Ms. WONG Ka Man (Intellectually Disabled – Table Tennis), Mr. JIANG Tianyi (Table Tennis) and Ms. CHAN Hei Man Hayley Victoria (Windsurfing) made their debuts among the Awardees.

Following their successes in 2008, 2010 and 2011 Awards, Rugby Sevens Men’s Team clinched the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport” for the fourth time. In the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event” category, the Awards went to Women’s Wheelchair Fencing Team and the 22nd Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships Team of Five.

In addition, recently retired “Cycling Legend of Hong Kong” Mr. WONG Kam Po demonstrated his determination and perseverance on encouraging, counselling and assisting his teammates to achieve outstanding achievements in various local and international cycling competitions last year on top of his persistent exemplary role play, was awarded the “Hong Kong Sportsmanship Sports Stars Award”, incidentally right after his announcement of retirement from his competition career.
