2013 Summer Youth Leadership Camp on Olympism

Organized by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (the Federation), the Opening Ceremony of the 2013 Summer Youth Leadership Camp on Olympism was successfully held on 10 July 2013 (today) at the Tai Tam Scout Centre, Hong Kong.  The officiating guests included Miss Petty LAI, Acting Deputy Secretary (Recreation & Sport) of Home Affairs Bureau, Mr. PANG Chung, SBS, BBS, Hon. Secretary General of the Federation cum Acting Chairman of Hong Kong Olympic Academy, Olympic House Management Committee members including Mr. Tony YUE, MH, JP, and Mr. Kenneth FOK.

The Youth Olympism Camp was suspended for few years since 2006.  With the successful launching of the Olympism Camp held in February 2013 at Cheung Chau, the Federation decided to organize the Youth Olympism Camp again this summer to continue our objective of fostering the Olympism to the youth.

The participants of this Camp came from the four schools currently participating in the Sports Legacy Scheme, i.e., Queen Elizabeth School Old Students’ Association Tong Kwok Wah Secondary School, Heung To Middle School (Tin Shui Wai), Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School, and Sheung Shui Government Secondary School.  The 40 students were mingled and divided into four teams under the leadership of the retired athletes.  Through this opportunity, the retired athletes could share their experience with the students about their athlete career and enlighten them to become a full-time athlete in future.

Mr. PANG Chung expressed in the Opening Ceremony that the Federation promotes Olympism by three different channels of athletes, students and general public.  On the channels of students and public, the Federation arranges out-reach seminars to the schools and community centres, and also organizes youth camp during summer vacation for students.  In youth camp, the Federation expected to deliver Olympism to the youth and develop students’ leadership skills through seminars, team building activities, and sharing session with retired athletes, so as to equip the students to be outstanding leaders or athletes.
