The Hong Kong Athletes Career & Education Programme (HKACEP), under the auspice of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (The Federation), with the support from Englishtown, the Integrated General English Courses Certificate Presentation Ceremony was held on 24 May 2014 (today) morning at Englishtown Office in Times Square. Officiating guests including Mr. Victor HUI, GBS, JP, Vice President of the Federation and Chairman of HKACEP Committee, Mr. PANG Chung, SBS, Hon. Secretary General of the Federation and Vice Chairman of HKACEP Committee, Mr. Sam CHEUNG, President of Englishtown, Greater China and Mr. Sheldom LEUNG, Senior Center Manager of Englishtown.
With an aim to enhancing Hong Kong athletes’ English levels, The Federation has joined hands with Englishtown to provide over 567 Integrated General English Courses to athletes since 2007. The total cost of the sponsorship so far has been worth over $8.8 million Hong Kong dollars and a total of 126 athletes were benefitted.
At the presentation ceremony today, The Federation and Englishtown issued certificates to 10 outstanding athletes who attained best advancement in the past years, in recognition of the athletes’ endeavors in learning English in their spare time. Mr. CHOW Ka Wa (football player) who obtained the most advancement since he joined the programme 4 years ago. Ka Wa began his learning in 2010 starting from Elementary Stage (Level 3) and now reaching the Upper Intermediate Stage (Level 10), which is approximately equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0. It reflected Ka Wa’s dedication and hard work, his achievement also serves as a positive impact and sets a good example for other athletes who are aiming to improve their English skills.
Mr. Victor HUI, GBS, JP, Vice President of the Federation and Chairman of the HKACEP Committee, expressed his thanks to Englishtown for their continuous support in enhancing local athletes’ English skills and broadening their vision. He said, “Most athletes miss the opportunity for further education due to committing intensive training programmes and competitions. Englishtown’s Integrated General English Courses has the flexibility to fit in athletes’ busy schedules. Athletes can access Englishtown’s online learning platform and continue their English learning regardless of their location or time zone. We believe that learning English will be a key factor for athletes’ transition to their future career.”
In addition, in order to widely promote sports to the public, a Sports English Campaign was announced. Three athlete representatives including Mr. CHAN Chi Hong (football), Ms. CHEUNG Yi Nei (fencing), and Mr. LEUNG Chun Wai (athletics) shared their respective sports specific terminologies in English through English Town’s online platforms. We hope this campaign will help increase public interest in sports knowledge and participation.
Introduction of HKACEP:
HKACEP, under the auspices of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and funded by Home Affairs Bureau for the establishment of HKACEP Office since September 2008, HKACEP has been providing career, education and life skills supports to retired and retiring athletes. As at 15 May 2014, the programme has been providing various supports to over 300 athletes under 44 National Sports Associations.
