HONG KONG (August 14) - Hong Kong’s 26-strong delegation to the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, including Young Ambassador Stephanie AU Hoi Shun, will leave on Thursday (August 14) with high hopes of bettering their previous medal haul of two silvers at the August 16-24 event.
Four years ago, Hong Kong returned from the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore with two silver medals won in equestrian by Jasmine LAI Zin-man and in sailing by Michael CHENG Chun-leung.
The target of the delegation, which includes 18 athletes in eight sports, will be to hopefully improve on the previous performance. The delegation is led by Chef de Mission Kenneth K.K. FOK. The eight sports are Aquatics (Swimming), Badminton, Equestrian, Fencing, Golf, Table Tennis, Triathlon and Windsurfing. PANG Chung, SBS, Hon. Secretary General of the Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China accompanied the delegation to Nanjing.
Among the sports which Hong Kong will pin their hopes in winning a medal in Badminton and Golf which will be making a first appearance at the Youth Olympics.
Hosts China will field a 123-strong team and will be hot favourites to sweep the medal tables. China sent 68 athletes to the Singapore Youth Olympics, winning 30 gold, 16 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Comparable to the programme of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, the Nanjing Youth Olympics will feature 28 sports – adding Golf and Rugby Sevens – and 222 events attracting a total of 3,868 athletes, 282 more than the last edition.
The Games will also feature cultural exchange programmes and opportunities for participants to meet leading Olympic athletes. Among a cast of high-profile names is Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming.
