Star Athletes of Samsung 2016 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards Announced Tonight!


The results of the “Samsung 2016 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” was announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony this evening (21 March) at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Honourable C.Y. LEUNG GBM, GBS, JP, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region,   Mr. Timothy FOK, GBS, JP, Honorary Member of International Olympic Committee and President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (the Federation) and Ms. ZHAO Yiyin, Vice- President & Head of IT and Mobile Communication Business of Samsung Electronics H.K. Company, Limited respectively delivered an opening addresses at this “Hong Kong Sports Oscars” besides presenting awards to the winners. Other celebrities of this prestigious occasion included Mr. YU Zaiqing, Vice President of International Olympic Committee, Mr. YANG Jian, Deputy Director, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, the Hon. MA Fung Kwok, SBS, JP, Legislative Councilor (Sports, Performing Arts, Culture and Publication), the Hon. LAU Kong Wah, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs of Home Affairs Bureau and the Hon. NG Hak Kim, Eddie, SBS, JP, Secretary for Education of Education Bureau. Many senior Government officials, guests from the sports and entertainment sectors also attended this glamorous event.

The Federation received a total of 122 nominations from 45 NSAs for this year’s Awards. Winners were selected through votings by the Judging Panel, the Sports Media, and the public. The results of the six categories were officially announced during the Ceremony. 

Sarah LEE Wai Sze (Cycling) was a triple winner in this year’s Award. She got the highest votes among the eight athletes in the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” and clinched the “Samsung Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”. In addition, she was also the winner of Hong Kong Sportsmanship Sports Stars Award”. NG On Yee (Billiard) won the title for the sixth time and also won the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event”. Other “Hong Kong Sports Stars” winners included LEUNG Yuk Wing (Sports for the Physically Disabled - Boccia) and MAK Cheuk Yin (Bowling) were on the list for the third time and second time respectively; CHEUNG Ka Long (Fencing), TANG Wai Lok (Sports for the Intellectually Disabled – Swimming), WONG Chun Ting (Table Tennis) and CHENG Chun Leung Michael (Windsurfing) were debutants in this Award.  

Hong Kong Rugby Union Men's Sevens Team continued their outstanding performances in 2016 to win again the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport” for the seventh time again. For the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event”, Hong Kong Women Snooker Team and Hong Kong Lifesaving Female Line Throw Rescue Team were the winners in this category. The Federation applauded all awardees and wished them every success in their future sporting endeavours.

Taking this opportunity, the Federation would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Samsung Electronics H.K. In addition, the SF&OC President’s Commendation established this year aims to commend Hong Kong athletes who have made outstanding achievements or contributions on top of their competition results in the past years during the SF&OC Annual Dinner. In view of 2016 was the Olympic year and 2017 is the 20th anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR, athletes who had participated in three or more Olympic Games in the past 20 years were commended this evening. 11 athletes were awarded including: AU Hoi Shun, Stephanie, SZE Hang Yu, TSAI Hiu Wai, Sherry and Hannah Jane Arnett WILSON (Swimming); YIP Pui Yin and NG Wei (Badminton); CHAN Chun Hing and WONG Kam Po (Cycling); SO Sau Wah (Rowing); TIE Ya Na and CHEUNG Yuk (Table Tennis).
